My wedding, on the BBC…

BBC Technology Editor, Rory Cellan-Jones, is launching his new series on Radio 4 today. Titled ‘The Secret History of Social Networking’ it is a three-part documentary exploring the origins of social networking, going back to the 1970s.

The programme starts with my wedding to Angelica, and there is a trailer film on the BBC website today promoting the radio show and featuring several minutes of film from our wedding day!

Ealing Tweetup with Ronan MacManus

What a fantastic evening last week in Ealing! Ronan MacManus did an amazing job with the music, even managing to avoid the temptation of playing Stairway to Heaven… despite offering to play ‘any’ requests!

The team at the Rose & Crown did a fantastic job keeping every glass full. It was a Tuesday evening, but the pub was packed… Thanks go to Xerox for ensuring that the food and drinks were free for the bloggers attending the event. Neville Hobson wrote a great overview of the tweetup here.

BBC Radio 6 came to cover the event and about 90 people showed up to talk, network, chat, and hear the music. It was the best Tweetup yet. I was thinking about trying to do another one before Christmas, but with all the usual parties at Christmas and with only a month left to plan, I think it’s too much of a rush… Early February looks like a better option to me. Opinions?

I have over 40 vox pop videos – people giving their opinion on the event – and the entire set by Ronan, so you can expect to see me tweeting some video links soon. I’ve been holding back on the video because it’s taking a while to get everything edited, but you can expect to see it all arriving soon.

Are you a west London blogger or tweeter?

Then we want you!

The Ealing Tweetup has been going from strength to strength over the past couple of years. The last meeting attracted around 60 bloggers to the Rose & Crown pub for a July evening of sun and beer whilst chatting about the world online.

The next Ealing Tweetup – October 26th – is going to be even better! It’s at the Rose & Crown once again, but this time we have the support of Xerox – so the food and drinks will be on the house for thirsty bloggers, and we have some live music too. From 7.00pm, Ronan MacManus will do a one-hour solo set in the pub especially for the Ealing Tweetup!

So if you are a blogger, journalist, IT industry person, or just interested in meeting west London Twitter users in real life, go and register here! See you at the Tweetup!

Ealing Tweetup - July 8 2010

Is this the best place in London to watch the World Cup?

Where are you watching the World Cup games – especially the England ones? I was thinking about this at the weekend. I just landed from Rio on Saturday and I really did not fancy the idea of going straight out to a sports bar rammed full of drinkers in England shirts cheering the lads on – I was a bit tired. I did want to watch the game somewhere though…

I had ignored the idea that my local would be showing the game though as they don’t usually cover sports – it’s one of those pubs that is a refuge from big FA cup games. But then I noticed on their Facebook that they had set up screens both indoors and outdoors in the garden just for the World Cup! So, I headed over to the Rose & Crown in Ealing, where I could eat food in the garden (they have a BBQ going when it is sunny), enjoy a few pints of Fullers beer (£10 a bottle in São Paulo so I appreciated local prices), and watch the England game amongst a friendly crowd with table service for pints so nobody has to stop watching the game…

The best thing was that it was crowded, but not rammed… it was possible to find a seat and have some food watching the game with a good pub atmosphere, rather than some of the other local pubs where the England experience would be standing ten deep in fans with pints sloshing all over.

I know where I’m planning to enjoy a few more of the World Cup games… First England game of World Cup 2010

Ealing Tweetup (meet your Twitter buddies, for real!)

Do you use Twitter? Live in or around west London?
Why not meet and greet some other Twitter users from around the area over a pint or three?

I’m organising this ‘tweetup’ so all the local Twitter users get together for a pint and chat – and to meet in ‘3D’. Last time I did this we had over 25 people together for a drink, including school teachers, a local councillor, writers, web design experts, photographers… it was a random mix of west London neighbours and many have stayed in touch.

This time it’s going to be bigger and the pub is even promoting it too – as they want our beer money…! Hopefully we can get some free food or pints from Tom and his team if we get a good crowd along. We might even arrange a Twitter quiz or some other such games to try and drum up some cash for a good cause or something…

It’s a Friday night and Facebook users will be welcome to join us so please come along…

The closest tube is South Ealing, on the Piccadilly line. The 65 bus (Ealing Broadway to Richmond and Kingston) runs right past the pub, so you can also come via Ealing Broadway station (District and Central line tube and fast train link to Paddington)…
