No mosque at Ground Zero

This video – amongst others – has caused a stir on YouTube.

A lot of Americans clearly have an issue distinguishing between Islam as a faith and the terrorists who attacked the USA on 9/11. Take a look at this comment on CNN: “It would be a terrible mistake to destroy a 154-year-old building in order to build a monument to terrorism,” one woman said.

There are nearly 2m muslims who are also citizens of the USA. If I was one of them I would be asking why there is such a negative view of them from the general population – or at least the vocal population.

  1. given the fact that the majority of americans will never leave the country im not suprised by that comment. By meeting different people from different countries and religions you find that most are just normal people like us. You will always get the extremists in any religion or culture but they dont represent the majority and its very hard to forget that.

  2. I think the issue is that the World Trade Centers were destroyed in the name of Islam. Throughout the world, on that day, pictures were shown of Muslim people dancing in the street and ululating with joy in Islamic countries. I think it is difficult for many, particularly those whose loved ones were killed or whose lives were otherwise adversely affected, to watch a very huge monument to Islam be erected in the shadow of the destruction caused in Islam’s name.

Moreover, the reason, I believe, that many in America (and elsewhere) have such a negative view of Muslims, is that you really do not see the peace loving “mainstream” Muslims speak out or take other steps to stop the radicals, the terrorists, the fanatics who stone women to death for adultery and the honor killers. I think if mainstream Muslims were to take steps to demonstrate that the people who give them a bad name are on the fringe of their society and that they are working to get those people under control, the people of America (a nation of nothing but immigrants) would have a lot rosier view of them.
