I was at the CBI today. The Confederation of Indian Industry was hosting an event here in London and featuring many Indian business leaders. The new industry and commerce minister of India, Anand Sharma, was also in town and he gave an interesting talk.
He thundered quite a bit about how India has not fallen into the economic traps many of the western countries fell into, but what I thought was most interesting about his talk – given that he was addressing a business audience. He brought up the UN Millennium Goals and asked if we had all forgotten them because of the recession. It’s the first time in ages I have heard anyone refer to the MDGs, and I didn’t expect it today at the CBI.
It will be interesting to see where minister Sharma takes this mission. Will India play a leading role in the reform of the UN now by forcing them to admit that the organisation is no longer fit for purpose in the twenty-first century?
